Among its activities, the Glendale Police Foundation provides support and sponsorship of the Glendale Police Department's Canine (K-9) program.

Police K-9s are considered an essential asset in today's law enforcement environment. Effective deployment of a properly trained K-9 team is a cost-effective tool that serves to deter criminal activity, assist in the apprehension of dangerous suspects, protect property and generally support the various functions of the Glendale Police Department. Even more importantly, K-9s enhance safety and can save the life of a citizen or an officer.

The Glendale Police Department K-9 Unit is funded solely through

donations from the public. All costs of the program including training, equipment, food and veterinary care are paid for through the generosity of the citizens and business owners of our community.

Estimated Annual Cost of One K9 Officer

Purchase of a Police Service Dog (untrained) $6,000

Basic K-9 Patrol Training $4,250

Narcotic/Explosive Detection Training $4,000

Hard Surface Tracking Training $3,000

Food $1,500

Equipment/Supplies $500

Vet/Healthcare Services $300

By K-9 Officer Shawn Sholtis, K-9 “Sam”

Glendale cleaned house in the 2007 Ventura County K9 Competition in July. Many of you took the time to come and cheer us on…and it paid off! All four of our patrol K9s competed this year and all of them were at their peak performance. Here’s a run-down of the results (keep in mind that there were nearly 40 K9 teams from approximately 15 Southern California agencies competing)

1st Place Open Division – Ofc. Sholtis and “Sam”

4th Place Open Division – Ofc. Feeley and “Yudy”

4th Place Novice Division – Ofc. Hamilton and “Quwai”

Thanks again for supporting us. We are proud to take the “Top Agency” award, especially since we have been in existence for less than two years and competed against departments who have a deep-rooted K9 program with many years of experience. We will continue to let you all know about upcoming competitions for you and your families to attend. The next scheduled competition will be in Las Vegas on October 12-14, 2007. What a great excuse to go to Vegas! Hope to see you there.
